Audience, Memories and Oral histories

What is the value of memory in relation to history, and what is its role in the archive? How are audience memories and artist memories being used by oral historians and archivists to fill the gaps in archives? How might they cause problems for, or contest, the archive?

This workshop explored audience and artist memories, using the expertise of oral historian Linda Sandino and memory theorist Susannah Radstone. Among the participants were several people who responded to a call we put out for people with memories of Arnolfini to be involved in the workshops. Their memories were recounted and discussed in the second part of the workshop in response to materials presented from the archive, and in the plenary we considered how such memories might be elicited and included in the archive in the light of the theoretical and practical considerations presented by our speakers in the morning.
